Alice Marshall Finch was born in Woodvale, Virginia around 1849-1850. One of her great-granddaughters found two of Alice’s journals. The first is just under 100 pages long and was written between May and September of 1866 when she about 16 or 17 years old living outside of Richmond, Virginia. This journal includes her school lessons and some personal entries about her inner life and family events.

The other journal was written after she married Dr. Francis Sewall of Alabama. The second journal, while only 54 pages, spans from August 1880 to April 1889. Through Alice’s eye’s we see the birth of the Sewall’s six children and their relocation to Waverly, Texas.

The intention of this blog is to share these journals with her descendants and others interested in the life of a Southern American women in the late 1800s.
